Romanticism is defined by Merriam-Webster.com as a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement originating in the 18th century, characterized chiefly by a reaction against neoclassicism and an emphasis on the imagination and emotions. English romanticism started after the French Revolution which could be seen as the spark that started romanticism. This movement was started with a purpose to counter act the logic, balance, emotional restraint, and order that was neoclassicism. The first two writers to push these ideas and new style of writing forward were William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These two men started creating poetry that was created not threw logic and order, but through their emotions and imagination, which showed the overwhelming beauty and peacefulness of nature. Rom anticism brought the wonders of imagination, a freedom to write as one desired, the power of emotion, and the love for nature around us back into literature which would continue to influence for centuries to come.
